In year 2005, there were 14 Gujarat based companies who had 1000 crore or more sale per annum. After three years, in financial year 2008, nine more Gujarat based companies are added to 1000 crore sales club. What’s more, number of firms to make net profits of over Rs100 crore also went up to 14 from 10 in the same period.

Ahmedabad based Electrotherm, with more than 600% growth in sales in three years heads the Rs. 1000 crore sales club. Kalpataru power, Torrent Pharma, Sintex Industries are also on the list. Welspun Gujarat registered 900% growth in profits in three years, followed by Kalpataru Power, Sintex Industries, taking their net profits to more than Rs100 crore.

Of the five new companies that earned net profits of more than Rs100 crore in the last three years, four moved into the Rs1, 000 crore-plus brackets in sales. Essar Oil LTD was the only company to drop out of the Rs1, 000 crore sales list, while Arvind Mills fell off the list of firms with net profits exceeding Rs100 crore over that time.

Of the top 22 companies with more than Rs1,000 crore sales in Financial Year 2008, six are from the chemical and fertilizer sector, while four are from the pharma sector. Sun pharma, Cadila Healthcare, Alembic LTD and Torrent Pharma too reported sales of more than Rs1,000 crore.
