Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat,14 January, 2009

Vadodara’s Savli based Bombardier Transportation will produce 388 Metro rail cars for Delhi Metro’s extended network. Bombardier unveiled and showcased the first full scale mock-up of its advanced Bombardier MOVIA metro vehicle, a high-capacity metro car that will soon be transporting over 4 million passengers daily in Delhi Metro’s extended network. The MOVIA metro cars will be locally manufactured in Savli, at Bombardier’s recently opened railway vehicle plant.

Bombardier’s new manufacturing site in Savli is directly generating 750 new jobs dedicated to railway vehicle production, including stainless steel car body manufacturing, bogie manufacturing and final assembly activities. In addition, a further 2000 indirect jobs will be created based on increased activity in Bombardier’s local supplier base.

The company, which has been present in Gujarat for more than 35 years, already has a software development centre in Vadodara and a manufacturing facility at Maneja. This new investment of 33 million euros underlines Bombardier Transportation’s long-term commitment to Gujarat as well as developing the mobility infrastructure of India.

The Savli manufacturing site, is the first in India to be wholly-owned by a global foreign company, was built in a record 18 months and will be operating shortly; with the first railway cars already expected at the assembly lines by March 2009. Bombardier’s new manufacturing site in India was designed and built from scratch following the most modern industrial standards worldwide and based on a transfer of technology from Bombardier’s state-of-the-art railway vehicle manufacturing plant located in Gorlitz, Germany.

The new site is set to serve the mobility needs of other Indian cities as well as in the South East Asia region, of which the first order is the delivery of 424 BOMBARDIER MOVIA metro cars to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). To ensure a successful transfer of technology, the first 36 metro cars for DMRC will be produced by Bombardier in Germany while the remaining 388 metro cars will be produced in Vadodara, India.
