Shetty family is under Gujarat Police investigation

It should be mentioned here that Shilpa Shetty’s father Surendra Shetty, 62, and his wife Sunanda are charged by Gujarat’s Surat police with hiring gangsters to recover Rs 80 lakh (approximately US$170,000) reportedly due to Shilpa, who had modelled for an advertisement produced by Praful Sarees in 1998. They allegedly threatened Pankaj Agarwal, director of the company producing the saris.

Ms Shilpa had done modeling for Praful Saree, but when its owner Pankaj Agrawal had failed to pay the agreed amount of Rs 2 crore to her, Shilpa’s parents–Surendra Shetty and his wife Sunanda–had given a money recovery contract to Fazloo in 2003.

As part of this contract, Fazloo had made several calls to Mr Agrawal demanding Rs 2 crore in March, 2003, and later also.

Following this, Mr Agrawal had lodged a police complaint at Umra Police station of the city on May 1, 2003. Shilpa’s parents were called to the city and arrested by the local crime branch then but were later released on bail.

Fazloo was absconding since then but was later arrested by Delhi Police in connection with other crimes. He was lodged in Tihar Jail.

He was brought in Surat in March this year by a special team of the Surat Crime Branch. City Crime Branch DCP Subhash Trivedi had at that time told media persons that Shilpa may be questioned if gangster Fazloo Rahman discloses her name in Praful Saree extortion case.

In 2003 the Surat police had informed the court that it had prima facie evidence of Shetty’s involvement in the attempt to extort the dues from Agarwal and had allegedly tape-recorded a telephone conversation between him and the complainant in this regard. Assistant Police Inspector A A Damor, from the Umra police station, Surat had told the court the police had recorded a telephone conversation between Shetty and Agarwal, in which the latter mentioned a threatening call from a gangster to settle Shilpa’s account for Rs 2 crore (US $425,000). After his arrest Shilpa’s father was interrogated by investigating official B V Ramani at Umra police station. Ramani had told reporters that during interrogation Surendra admitted to having talked to Rehman’s associate Uday Shetty alias Ashraf.

Sunanda Shetty met Modi in Gandhinagar

In 2004, Sunanda Shetty came to Gandhinagar to meet Mr. Modi and spent around 15 minutes with him. After this meeting she told waiting reporters that it was a “courtesy call.” When asked what was discussed in the meeting, Shetty said she spoke of “the beauty of Ahmedabad.” When pressed further, she said: “Other things were also discussed…I can’t be just talking about Ahmedabad alone….it is personal.”
