It must be a jubilant day for Gujarat Congress today. The party has been victorious in maiden election of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. Gandhinagar is capital city of Gujarat which witnessed its first election in history two days back, result of which awarded 18 seats to Congress and 15 seats to BJP today. No other party or independent candidate could win a single seat.

This is a great news for Gujarat Congress’s new President Arjun Modhwadia(MLA, Porbandar). This is the first election under his leadership in the state.

One Pravin Patel, former Gandhinagar BJP President, proved fatal stroke for BJP. Patel was denied ticket from the party, therefore he contested on Congress ticket and won with two friend candidates in ward no.4.

While BJP is ruling six Municipal Corporations in Gujarat, the Congress party now enjoys victory over two Municipal Corporations in the state – Junagadh in Saurashtra and capital town Gandhinagar.

Gandhinagar has been traditionally a Congress bastion. However local MLA and MP are from BJP, because Assembly and Parliament constituency enjoys larger area other than Gandhinagar town in its bound. If we look at the core Gandhiangar Municipal Corporation area, even Advani and Vajpayee had not received majority in this particular geographical area in past. Gandhinagar district panchayat is ruled by Congress party.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi was in Surat when result was declared.

Wards and winners( 3 seat in each ward)

Ward 1 BJP all seats
Ward 2 Congress all seats
Ward 3 Congress all seats
Ward 4 Congress all seats
Ward 5 BJP all seats
Ward 6 Congress all seats

Ward 9 BJP 2 and Congress 1
Ward 10 BJP all seats
ward 11 BJP all seats

Important highlights:

-Gandhinagar Congress President lost the election.

-BJP was ahead in initial trends, however after 11.00 am the fight became closer, and both party had 15-15 seats each. All winning processions, dhol, gulal, sweet distribution stopped, and everyone wanted to know who would win three seats of ward no. 4 whose result was pending. Just before the noon time, it was announced that all three seats of ward no. 4 had been won by Congress party.

-Gandhinagar is like a government colony, and it has major population of government employees. It is believed that government employees are not happy with the government, and that has reflected in results.

-Another crucial thing was poor ticket distribution of BJP. Some people were told to contest the election at 2.00 in morning just on nomination filing day. Some loyal and influential party workers were denied tickets.

-Gandhinagar has negligible Muslim population.
