This beautiful bird is flamingo. It is now also called as domestic bird, and can be found in all seasons in Gujarat. It is the state bird of Gujarat.

On Sunday morning Ahmedabad’s Panjarapol based Jiv Daya Trust got message that injured flamingo bird was bleeding badly and lying near a small wetland in Sarkhej area. Jiv Daya Trust moved Namo Namah Parivar volunteers who rushed to the spot and immediately took this injured bird to Jiv Daya trust hospital which is located in Panjarapol area of western Ahmedabad. The bird was badly injured and bleeding. A doctor was called to provide it primary treatment. First the volunteers removed all dust and other impurities from its injured part, and dressing was done with a dosage of pain-killer after cleaning up.

The most important thing is a kind of injury that this bird has suffered with. According to Kartik Shastri and Aditya Roy, the bird has been injured by hunter. According to them it is common practice of hunters to first obstruct a path of flying flamingo through tied nearly invincible rope to take the bird down. After the bird is hit, hunter would go and break its rib in wings and also would break its legs. Thus the bird would become unfit for flight and would not be able to move even slightly. The hunter would then be able to bring the bird in a bag and take it to desired place. The bird would ultimately go to somebody’s dish.

So, this state-bird would not be able to fly again. However its life has been saved as of now. It will be operated for injuries on Monday or possibly on Tuesday.

Kartik Shastri and Aditya Roy pointed out that there are some mini-wetlands across the city where flamingos can be spotted anytime in numbers some times as high as 100 to 150. Therefore possibility of some hunting activity at these spots can’t be ruled out.
