Ahmedabad, 13 January 2012
Presented above are couple of films made by NID Ahmedabad last year on the issue of thousands of birds getting killed on and before Uttarayan(14th January) each year in Gujarat due to usage of sharp kite flying strings. More films on this subject created by volunteers are presented below. Sharp threads work like flying knives in the air that kill both the humans and the birds. Society needs correction at regular interval. Lately we are celebrating Uttarayan using glass paved, sharp threads just for pleasure of cutting another kite. Such fancy pleausure is responsible for killing thousands of birds. While Muslims can celebrate Bakra Eid killing lacs of animals just to celebrate, we are not like that. This practice of flying kites with sharp manja and killing birds and slitting throats of humans riding on two-wheelers is not our culture. Can’t we avoid flying kites in the evening when thousands of birds are extra active and returning to their nests? Can’t we use simple, non-harmful row threads? Can’t we avoid flying too many kites?
