Finally, elevated corridor connecting Law garden to Vivekanand bridge opens(photos/video)

Ahmedabad, 12 September 2013

Finally the elevated corridor connecting Law garden/Gujarat college area to Swami Vivekananda bridge(Ellis bridge) was opened today.

The Ahmeadbad Municipal Corporation had completed construction of this elevated corridor around two and half months back, but the Mayor was waiting for BJP leader LK Advani’s consent to inaugurate it. The consent never arrived. Mayor’s office messed up the things, and couldn’t rope in Chief Minister too for inauguration. In nonsensical approach, the Mayor continued to try for either Advani or Chief Minister’s consent for inauguration. The bridge was not opened for public during this time.

It is learnt that finally the municipal commissioner intervened and requested Gandhinagar to direct the Mayor to immediately open the bridge. In a heftily arranged programme, the bridge was today opened for public at last.

However the Mayor is yet expecting VIP to come and name the bridge. After opening the bridge she said, “Saheb will come to name the bridge.”

This elevated corridor project, first of its kind in Ahmedabad was taken up under JnNURM programme. The corridor starts near Church on Gujarat college road and passes through Gujarat college(old Shalin hotel) circle and Gandhigram railway crossing(near Orient club). The corridor cross the Ashram road, takes turn opposite MJ library and ends at Swami Vivekanand bridge on elevated height. Three lanes of this corridor are 11.4 meter wide, with carriage width of 10.5 meter.

According to railway department norms, construction over Gandhigram railway crossing has been carried out through steel girder.

A BRTS bus shelter is yet to be constructed near M.J.Library over the elevated corridor. It will be used by BRTS passengers.

Ranjit Buildcon limited was contractor of this project, while Stup consultant private limited was structural consultant. Total project cost estimated at the beginning of the project was Rs. 60.00 crore. The project was approved by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Standing Committee on 2nd December in 2010. The project kicked off in February 2011. Target of completion of this project was 20 months.
