Government of India is giving a thought to an idea of granting exemption to private vehicles from toll tax collection. Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari said this in his interview with Bhaskar group of newspapers.
Gadkari in this interview further said that every year Rs. 88,000 crore fuel is wasted due to queues at toll tax booths as per an estimate by IIM Kolkata and Transport Corporation of India.
He said revenue from private vehicles in comparison with commercial vehicles is negligible anyway.
He said in year 2013-14 Rs. 11,400 crore were gained as toll tax revenue, of which Rs. 9,800 crore were gained from commercial vehicles while only Rs. 1,600 crore were gained from private vehicles.
Editor’s note: Forget implementation, even thinking on this line by government is good news. If after considering all aspects, government actually decides to exempt private vehicles from toll tax, it would be an excellent step.
