National carrier Air India today announced that it will link Rajkot and Delhi with 6 weekly flights from 23 February with a 70-seater CRJ aircraft.
The flight will operate six days a week except Wednesday. The flight 91631 will leave Delhi at 05.50 hrs and arrive in Rajkot at 0815 hrs. The return flight will depart from Rajkot at 0845 hrs and land back at Delhi at 11hrs. With the operation of this flight Rajkot will be connected directly to Delhi and Mumbai.
Air India further announced that the frequency for flights on Delhi-Surat route will be doubled to 6 per week.
These two were long pending demands arising from the state of Gujarat. The third demand to connect Ahmedabad to London and New Jersy through direct flight was turned down by union Civil Aviation minister Raju during his recent visit to Gujarat.
It should be mentioned that on 20th January, union Civil Aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju visited Ahmedabad to attend a review meeting on civil aviation department related issued pertaining to Gujarat. One of the issues raised in this meeting was about Rajkot-Delhi air connectivity which is long pending demand of Gujarat government before the centre. Rajkot is main city of Saurashtra/Kutch region of Gujarat which is presently connected to Mumbai via air route. During his meeting in Ahmedabad, state Civil Aviation minister Saurabh Patel had told Raju that people of Saurashtra/Kutch regions have to travel to Ahmedabad by road to catch flight for Delhi. They should get direct air connectivity from Rajkot itself. Patel had later made announcement that Civil Aviation minister agreed to Gujarat’s demand and Rajkot – Delhi air connectivity will start from February 15.
