Compulsory voting law:Gujarat govt invites suggestions from people

Gujarat government has invited suggestions from people on implementation of compulsory voting law.
In view of upcoming elections of Municipal Corporations/Municipalities/district panchayats and taluka panchayats scheduled to take place in the month of October this year, the state government has fixed the last date of sending suggestion as 18 April 2015.
The suggestions can be sent to Development Commissioner and Member Secretary, Gujarat State, Block no.16/2, Dr. Jivraj Mehta Bhavan, Gandhinagar. Suggestions can also be e-mailed to [email protected]. Fax number 079-23254076 and 079-23254114 are also open to receive suggestions.
Background:
Gujarat assembly had passed Gujarat Local Authorities Laws(amendment) bill-2009 which covers provision of 50% women’s reservation and compulsory voting in local body elections. The bill has been approved by Governor. As Gujarat is the first state which has made provision of compulsory voting, the department of Urban Development and Housing, Government of Gujarat has formed a committee to make the rules for execution of this law. The committee is led by KC Kapoor(retired state election commissioner). Top officials of various departments and experienced government officers are part of this committee.
