Their own ‘Owaisi’

By Rupang Bhatt, Ahmedabad

Looking at these posts, in one line, it can be comfortably derived that the section of Patidar community members in Gujarat has chosen ‘Owaisi’ style leader. The way he speaks is no match with mature and wise leaders of Patel community. But the community members say this is agitation and you can’t expect the language of agitation to be in match with the language of peace.

Here are some of the Facebook posts of ongoing agitation’s leader published in last three years span.

This personal fanatic taste of central face of agitation mixed with aggressive casteism and inclination to violence is the reason why peace loving people of Gujarat apprehend danger.

The leader of this agitation cites Bhagat Singh to make his point that violence is also possible as part of this agitation. He perhaps is unaware that Bhagat Singh had taken a particular path of agitation for country’s freedom movement, and not for some sectarian goal. He had taken such path against foreign rulers.

The only relief is that the amazing community overall is wise, and it also has voices like Mathurbhai Savani, Pravinbhai Gajera, or on the political front Anandiben Patel and others who disagree with this style of agitation.

Greed and feeling of injustice can corrupt or convert any mind. There’s a well known proverb that mobs are mindless. While there’s genuine feeling that the present reservation system is unjust, and there’s great anger against it, the agitators must know that peaceful agitation, dialogue, court petition, awareness campaign and in unavoidable circumstances token civil disobedience are acceptable paths, but any kind of violence or attempt to create anarchy or activities that may disturb peace and stability is unacceptable.
