Whole Ambani family present at launch of Jio

New Mumbai

It was a family reunion of sorts when billionaire Mukesh Ambani on Sunday re-forayed into telecom with a glittering launch of Jio that brought his brother Anil, sister-in-law Tina and nephews Anmol and Anshul together with his family.

Mother Kolileben also graced the gala function that lasted nearly two hours.

Mukesh’s wife Nita and three children and also his sisters were present on the occasion.

The event started with Mukesh’s children Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani anchoring the show to start the event. Kokilaben lit the lamps and she was joined by Mukesh and his wife Nita Ambani, Akash, Anant and Isha on the dais.

“Today is a proud day for any mother to see her children take flight. We will use Jio to deliver health and education across the country. It will break the rural-urban divide. Jio is not just 4G, it is an ecosystem that will prepare the future generation for the world,” Nita Ambani said.

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, who will be the brand ambassador for the Jio’s 4G mobile and broadband services, performed at the function including the hit Gerua song from his latest movie Dilwale.

A R Rehman performed the famous Jai Ho and a track from Swadesh.

In 2003 Mukesh launched Reliance’s CDMA mobile business on the same day, birth anniversary of RIL group founder and his father Dhirubhai Ambani, tag line ‘Kar Lo Duniya Mutthi mein’.

The business is now Reliance Communications and is being handled by brother Anil.

The two brothers have already come together for sharing of mobile airwaves or spectrum as well as infrastructure like mobile towers and masts.

The partnership brings together the once-feuding Ambani brothers who had had an ugly public feud after death of their father Dhirubhai Ambani in 2002 to split the Reliance empire.

In their telecom partnership, Anil’s Reliance Communications will access 4G mobile networks of Jio, which, in turn, can use the former’s 2G and 3G networks when needed.

Mukesh’s Jio had in the past partnered Reliance Communications, India’s fourth-biggest mobile phone carrier, for sharing of mobile masts and leasing of optic fibre network.

Jio won 4G mobile airwaves in 2010 and on Sunday started rollout of nationwide commercial services. Reliance Jio holds the biggest chunk of liberalised spectrum among telecom operators and that can be used for deploying any technology for mobile services.

Reliance Communications will also enter into a pact with Jio for trading and sharing of 4G mobile airwaves.
