AMC proposes OFC backbone and Wadaj area development under Smart City scheme

100 cities nationwide are competing to be in first list of 20 cities to get funds under the Smart city scheme of central government. Six cities from Gujarat competing are Amdavad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Dahod. It is believed that Gandhinagar and Surat are likely to be selected in first round. While this year there will be 20 citis selected, the next year will witness selection of 40 cities, a year after that will see selection of another 40 cities for smart city project funding by centre.
The list of first 20 cities is going to be announced on January 28.
Ahmedabad’s Smart City proposal is mainly divided in two parts. First part is Pan-City proposal that includes command control centre with city-wide Optical Fiber Cable network for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) services.Applications of smart water, smart transport, energy audit, surveillance and smart traffic are main highlights of this proposal.
The second part of AMC’s proposal for Smart City project is about Area based development. It proposes a redevelopment and retrofitting proposal of Wadaj area. While retrofitting covers 515 acres of proposed TOZ area with retrofitting with higher capacity and smart infrastructure, the redevelopment sub-section proposes redevelopment of 75 acres of slum area of Vadaj through Public Private Partership(PPP) model and provision of housing for 8,000 families.
Command Control Centre and OFC Network for AMC Services:
– Integration of services at the central level for better decision making – connection of all AMC services under one system
-Central monitoring of water supply, drainage operations, transit operations, traffic, environment, utilities and safety
-Disaster and Emergency Management
-City-wide OFC network which will function as a backbone for a system of sensors with varied applications such as environment monitoring, traffic control, surveillance etc. Besides supporting applications
-The OFC network would also connect different civic departments, hospitals, schools and other public institutions
-The information so collected will be monitored and analyzed through a central control room and data server
-Objective – create integration of services at the central level for better decision making
-1,000 km OFC network with sensors and applications covering all major roads of the city and connecting all AMC offices, civic centers, health centers, etc.
-Central Command Center for monitoring of all applications and integration of apps
-Construction of a command and control center
-Module for smart monitoring of water, drainage and transit operations
-App-based module which will integrate all public as well as private transport facilities in the city with respective schedules and availability
-Surveillance cameras to monitor traffic, identify emergencies, etc.
-Smart Traffic Management Module – Vehicle detection and optimization of traffic signals
-Sensor based LED street lighting
-Smart Parking facilities
-High speed internet connectivity through public Wi-Fi hotspots
-Modules for environmental & pollution monitoring, integration with Smart Learning
Area Based Development
-Retrofitting and Redevelopment of Wadej area
-Concept – Project focused on two major aspects:
-Development of Transit oriented zones built on principles of promoting non-motorized transport – promoting higher densification through higher development rights and provisions of smart infrastructure
-Slum Redevelopment – In-situ redevelopment of slum-areas – project will include residential as well as commercial components to be developed on PPP basis
-Scale: Total Area – ~590 acres
