Contending that the Gujarat government’s move to provide 10 per cent quota to EBCs would adversely affect the backward classes, Congress Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao today announced to undertake a fast on May 5 in Delhi against the move.
Rao, who is the convener of OBC MPs forum, said here that extending reservation to new communities would lead to reduction of the quota for backward classes.
He alleged that the governments are accepting the demands for quota by “some upper castes” as they turned violent.
“What would happen if the backward communities, who are more in numbers, also hit the streets?” he asked.
Rao said he would invite leaders of other parties, including CPI, CPI(M), to his protest.
The Gujarat government yesterday announced 10 per cent reservation for economically backward classes among upper castes.
