Over half a dozen dams in Gujarat overflowing, Dangs get heavy rain again

Gandhinagar: With the heavy rains rivers across the state have surged and water logging and flood has occurred in many areas.

Over 30 villages in Dangs have lost contact while many in Saurashtra region have also been flooded.

Over half a dozen dams in Gujarat have overflown owing to heavy rains in last few days even as water level in Sardar Sarovar Narmada Dam has also crossed the maximum level in the early hours today.

11 sluice gates of Phuljhar dam in Jamnagar have been opened to one ft to release excess water. Kosvada dam in Tapi district of South central Gujarat has also overflown.

Rains have wreaked havoc in Saurashtra, Kutch and South Gujarat region and there seems to be no respite as the met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places over Gujarat region and in Daman and Dadra Nagar Haveli, the adjoining union territories in the next 24 hours as well.

Dhrol taluka in Jamnagar district has received 341 mm or around 14 inches of rains. Jamjodhpur (210mm), Kalavad (266mm) and Lalpur (185mm) are the other main recipients of very heavy downpour in the district which has received an average of 181 mm of rains with most of the dams including Sasoi, Phuljari and Vavadi overflowing. Low lying areas have been alterted.

Porbandar (district average 89mm, maximum Ranavav 118mm), Rajkot (district average 79 mm, maximum Paddhari 172 mm) , Devbhoomi Dwarka (district average 118mm, maximum Khambalia- 230 mm), Valsad (district average 133 mm, maximum Kaprada 210 mm), Dangs (district average 114 mm, maximum Waghai 140 mm) were other heavy to very heavy rain receivers while the rain scanty Kutch also received heavy to very heavy rains as per its average figures. The Pak bordering district got 56 mm of average rains with Rapar taluka recording maximum 102 mm, Abdasa (86 mm) and Lakhpat (71 mm) also had good rains in the last 24 hours during which a total of 179 talukas of all the 33 districts got some amount of rains.

Junagadh, Gir Somnath, Morbi, Gandhinagar and Chota Udepur also received moderate to heavey rains at a few places. Ahmedabad received only 12 mm rains (both as district average and in the city) while Dacroi (63 mm) and Sanand (40 mm) got moderate downpour. The state average of monsoon rains has now reached 46.24%.

Meanwhile, NDRF teams are still deployed in some parts of Saurashtra and Gujarat for rescue and relief operations.
