Gujarat polls: Congress not to change seats of winnable sitting MLA’s, no ticket for two time losers

Ahmedabad: Congress, the main opposition party in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in its ticket distribution strategy for the upcoming assembly election due to be held by December has reportedly included two said rules including the one about not to change the existing seats of its winnable MLA’s.

The second rule is said to be the one regarding ‘no ticket’ to any such person who in the past had lost two elections.

Today’s meeting also took decision to postponed its proposed Adivasi Yatra in tribal belt and decided to hold five public meetings instead in the month of April.

50% tickets to youths and one seat to woman candidate in each district were another two decisions taken in this meeting.

Congress has started preparations believing that the elections will come earlier than scheduled in May-early June.

A senior leader of the party confirmed the development today and said that no MLA would be allowed to change his/her constituency.

He also said that a meeting of senior party leaders including state president Bharatsinh Solanki, leader of opposition Shankersinh Vaghela, former state presidents Siddharth Patel and Arjun Modhwadia was held today at the party headquarters here in which various issues related to the poll preparations were taken up.

The leader claimed that the selection and announcement of tickets for the party would take around two more months.

‘Though the list of aspirants is ready and other procedures are in place yet it will take at least two more months,’ he said.

Meanwhile, the new rule regarding not changing the constituency, is likely to face some opposition, as some of the senior leaders of the party are reportedly themselves looking for ‘safer’ ones.

Assembly elections in Gujarat are due to be held by December here, however after the scenario post the win of ruling BJP in the recently held polls in four of the five states, speculations are rife about an early election. The main opposition congress is out of power here for years.
