June 08, 2017
Morbi: After snatching control of Mahesana municipality in north Gujarat, the BJP has today snatched another municipality in Morbi in Saurashtra region.
BJP’s Gitaben Kanzaria has been elected president of Morbi municipality while Bharatbhai Jaria has been elected vice president.
Soon after Patidar quota agitation, Congress through open support of Hardik Patel led Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti(PAAS) had captured Morbi municipality in 2015, however due to intense infighting, a rebel group of 12 Congress Councillors formed ‘Vikas Samiti’ and toppled ruling Congress body last year in July. BJP had 20 Councillors and with the support of 12 rebel Congress Councillors, rebel Congress Councillor Naynaben Rajyaguru was elected president of Morbi municipality, as majority mark was 28. Tactically, the body was in BJP’s control, However Naynaben too was a Congress Councillor.
Today BJP councilor Gitaben was elected as president with support of 35 Councillors.
In 2015 amid Patidar quota agitation sentiments, Congress had won 32 of total 52 seats while BJP could win 20 seats. After the formation of rebel group of 12 Congress Councillors, BJP was enjoying the support of 32 Councillor well above 28 mark of majority. Now BJP has 35 Councillors in its support and also the post of president.
