Amazon’s Global Selling arm sees 500% growth in base in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Leading E-commerce player Amazon today said that it has seen a phenomenal growth of 500% in its global sellers base in Gujarat in two years since its launch in India.

Addressing a press conference here today Abhijit Kamra, Head-Global Selling of Amazon India today said that the Global Selling business meant for selling the products to overseas customers only was launched in India in May 2015 and at that time it had a small base of sellers and products.

‘It has now gone up to 23000 sellers and 65 million products across India and over 1000 sellers in Gujarat alone. The apparel and home linen (including bed sheets) segment is doing extremely well in Gujarat and has seen over 1300% increase in the sellers base in two years while the overall base in the state has increased by 500%,’ he said.

He added that both the fast fashion apparel and ethnic wears from Gujarat were in high demand overseas.

‘Printed and colourful bed sheets were actually not used as bed sheets by the customers abroad. They use it as tapestry, wall hanging or sofa covers etc and these are in high demand,’ he said.

He said that most of the sellers in Gujarat were from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Bharuch currently. ‘We are continuously holding workshop to train our sellers and increase our base in Gujarat and elsewhere. We have our Amazon market place for global selling in 10 countries including US, Europe, Japan and China,’ he said.

Kamra, who also participated in a round table discussion at the ongoing textile India trade fair cum exhibition in Gandhingar, said that a very fruitful discussion took place there.

To a query he said that the GST was good for the domestic business of Amazon and other E-commerce players but the Global selling business would not have any impact of it.
