Congress delegation to meet CM Vijay Rupani at 4.00 pm today over Hardik’s fast and his demands

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has allotted time to leader of opposition of Congress party in Gujarat and other Congress leaders to receive their representation over fast of Congress aide quota agitation leader Hardik Patel. According to leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani, Congress delegation has been given 4 pm appointment on Wednesday to meet Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Congress leaders are going to make representation over Hardik Patel’s demands including total farm loan waiver, reservation quota to Patels in jobs and education and release of Hardik aide from Surat Alpesh Kathiriya who is in judicial custody in sedition case. Congress leaders have expressed concern that none from State government has visited Hardik Patel who is on ‘indefinite’ fast for last 12 days. The state government has more than once described Hardik’s agitation Congress run, Congress directed and Congress inspired one. The government and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) has asked Congress to clear its stand whether it is in favor of giving Other Backward Class(OBC) reservation to Patidar community. The government has also made it clear on more than one occasions that as per the Supreme Court order, it is not possible to give reservation beyond 49% limit. Even if the government decides, the courts will disapprove it for sure. On farmers loan waiver, the government has made it clear that it is in favor of extending other benefits to farmers ensuring lower input and higher output cost. Hardik’s agitation has not attracted mass support in so big fashion so far during his fast agitation that can compel the government to bend. Some pressure has been built with Congress assisting small-time protest programmes at small centres and mobilizing support in favor of Hardik lately after poor response in initial phase. Hardik is on ann-shan which means he is not taking just ann. A person can live life without taking ann if he/she take fruits, milk and other things. Hardik had at one stage of his 12-day old fast agitation stopped taking liquid. Continuing this stand could build some pressure, but in less than two-day period, he resumed taking water. Now his supporters have issued threat that Hardik would again stop taking water if government doesn’t turn up to negotiate. However, government has little to negotiate. Reservation even if given, would not sustain in courts for sure. Debt waiver is unethical practice. Giving debt waiver would be populist and unfair step. What about those farmers who are honest and have paid debt? Were they foolish? Then there’s no widespread demand from farmers that their debt should be waived. The government has instead made farm loan availability at zero percent interest. While Hardik encash Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel’s name for his fast agitation, the question is, would Sardar Patel and Mahatma Gandhi favor farm loan waiver and fast over such demand? Suicides of farmers had not stopped or decreased in states where farm loan waiver was given in the past. Ideally, farm debt waiver could be given in extra ordinary circumstances like three-year famine or other wide spread farm crisis of this level.
