Another old overhead water tank collapses differently than planned during demolition drive in Ahmedabad city

Ahmedabad: Another dilapidated water tank in the city demolished as per the instructions of the AMC, did not collapse as planned and parts of it fell on a nearby house in D-cabin locality of Chandkheda area.

A similar incident had taken place on November 18 in Vasantnagar of Gota area of the city during demolition of an old overhead tank of the Gujarat housing board.

An AMC official said that no one was injured in the incident as the whole area was vacated before demotion of the tank.

The local however alleged that the parts of a house were damaged due to collapse of the tank.

‘A family used to live in the house but had vacated it in the wake of the tank demolition. Who will pay for the damage to the house,’ a local said.

‘The AMC, the largest urban civic body in Gujarat should use more modern technology for this work or else a big accident might happen during the ongoing demolition drive,’ he added.

Notably the AMC and other authorities were demolishing all the dilapidated tanks in the city after local BJP MP, party president and union home minister Amit Shah recently took the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) authorities to task over the issue.

There were a total of 191 overhead water tanks in the city of which 73 were not in use now. Out of the total 99 dilapidated old such tanks, 73 were not in use. Of these so far more than half have been demolished.
