Seventh Congress MLA resigns from the Assembly ahead of polling for Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Two more Congress MLAs have tendered their resignations ahead of Rajya Sabha election for four seats in Gujarat. Congress MLAs from Karjan assembly seat in Central Gujarat, Akshay Patel and Kaprada seat in South Gujarat Jitubhai Chaudhary handed over their resignations from the State assembly to Speaker Rajendra Trivedi last evening. Speaker has accepted both resignations and two MLAs are no more the members of State assembly.

The MLAs are voters in Rajya Sabha elections and each MLA is very crucial to decide who would win and who would lose the election. As per its strength on the day the Rajya Sabha elections were announced, opposition Congress party could win two of four vacant seats of Rajya Sabha comfortably in Gujarat. However later BJP fielded three instead of two candidates and made the election interesting. After BJP’s move to field former Congress leader Narhari Amin as third candidate, seven Congress MLAs including Akshay Patel and Jitu Chaudhary have resigned from the assembly. Earlier MLAs representing Limbdi, Gadhda, Dhari, Dang and Abdasa had resigned from the State assembly.

Polling for four vacant seats of Rajya Sabha in Gujarat will take place on June 19. The State Congress has fielded former State party chief Bharatsinh Solanki and party’s national secretary Shaktisinh Gohil as candidates. Congress had called a meeting of MLAs to discuss Rajya Sabha election today.

Rumours of resignations of more MLAs including those elected from Thasra, Palanpur and Bhiloda were circulating in the morning. However some of them refuted such rumours.

BJP candidate Narhari Amin said, State Congress will break further.
