Morbi Bridge tragedy: Oreva Ready to compensate, take responsibility of orphan victims

Gandhinagar: Ajanta Manufacturing Private Limited (OREVA Group), during the suo motto hearing in Gujarat High Court regarding the Morbi Bridge Collapse, has submitted that the company is ready to take responsibility for the 7 orphaned kids and compensate the families of the victims of the tragedy.

Making the submission before the bench of  Chief Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh J. Shastri, Senior Counsel ND Nanavaty, appearing for Ajanta said “Some wrong has been done at the level of the company as well. The only thing we can do at this stage is compensate. For 7 children, who have become orphans. The company will give take care of their residence, other amenities of life, and education, and as per their qualification, they will be provided with a job. So far, as those who have died…who got injured and recovered, we are ready to give them compensation.”

The bench took the submission on record and in the order clarified that the payment of compensation would not absolve the company of its liability and it will not affect the action that the state may take against the company.

The amount of compensation to be paid to the victims will be determined by considering the Apex court’s judgement in Sarla Verma and Ors. Vs Delhi Transport Corpn. and Anr 2008, the bench said when asked by the Senior Counsel Nanavaty.

Senior Counsel Nanavaty also submitted that taking care of the bridge was not a commercial venture and the company had nothing to earn from it.

‘Jhulto’ Hanging Bridge on Machhu River in Morbi collapsed on October 30, killing 135 people, the Gujarat High Court is hearing a suo moto case in the matter. Oreva Group was responsible for the repair and maintenance of the bridge. DeshGujarat
