Fitness test for 20 lakh heavy commercial vehicles to start from April 1
February 06, 2023
Gandhinagar: As mandated under the new vehicle scrappage policy, about 20 Lakh heavy commercial vehicles will have to undergo an automated fitness test. Failing the test two consecutive times will lead to the scrapping of that vehicle.
In another development, over 5000 state government vehicles will be scrapped directly without any test as they are 15 years old.
Starting in June next year, all commercial vehicles – heavy and medium – must take the fitness test. The automated fitness test could be extended to all vehicles with above 15-year registration cycle if 100 testing stations are set up by then, sources claimed.
The scrappage policy announced in August 2021 requires heavy transport vehicles to undergo computerized, automated tests, and their report cards should be uploaded to the parivahan sewa website automatically.
Till now, Gujarat only has four automated testing stations, one each in Surat, Mehsana, Bharuch and Amreli, which is why the centre has asked the state to leave out the private vehicles from mandatory tests that will start in June 2024.
