1521 shelter homes set up across Gujarat in addition to 76 permanent shelters: Govt

Gandhinagar:  Gujarat has a coastline stretching over 1600 km, the coastal areas of the state frequently face the impact of cyclones. To safeguard its people from such storms, the state government has constructed 76 multipurpose cyclone shelters (MPCS) in the coastal regions. Today, as the state braces itself to combat the potential effects of Cyclone Biparjoy, these shelters are proving to be useful for the masses.

Among these 76 multipurpose cyclone shelters, 25 are located in Junagadh, 29 in Gir Somnath, 4 in Porbandar, 4 in Devbhoomi Dwarka, 4 in Kutch, 2 in Amreli, 1 in Jamnagar, 1 in Navsari, 5 in Bharuch, and 1 in Ahmedabad.

Furthermore, immediate arrangements have been made for 1521 shelter homes in the 8 districts of the Kutch-Saurashtra region. These include 196 in Junagadh, 173 in Kutch, 56 in Jamnagar, 140 in Porbandar, 182 in Devbhoomi Dwarka, 182 in Gir Somnath, 507 in Rajkot, 31 in Morbi, and 236 in Rajkot. Medical teams are conducting regular visits to these shelter homes, ensuring proper health checks for the people who have been relocated there.

The government is maintaining vigilance to prevent any loss of life in the state due to the potential storm. The state government has prioritized the evacuation of residents living in cyclone-prone areas, and thus far, more than 94,000 people from the 8 affected districts have been relocated to safer places.

As of now, a total of 94,427 citizens have been evacuated to secure locations in these 8 districts. The figures include 46,823 in Kutch, 4,864 in Junagadh, 9,942 in Jamnagar, 4,379 in Porbandar, 10,749 in Devbhoomi Dwarka, 1,605 in Gir Somnath, 9,243 in Morbi, and 6,822 in Rajkot.
