Kankaria lake and Sabarmati Riverfront closed amidst wind and rain forecast

Gandhinagar: For the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, the Kankaria Lakefront premises were closed to visitors in anticipation of the forecasted heavy winds and rain in Ahmedabad today, the Lower promenade of Sabarmati Riverfront was also closed. The closure of these popular public spaces aims to minimize potential risks to visitors and prevent any untoward incidents following the aftermath of Cyclone Biparjoy.

Security arrangements have been heightened, with the Ahmedabad fire brigade, security personnel, and police ensuring strict control over access to the closed areas. Entry to the Kankaria Lakefront premises was halted earlier today at 12:30 pm, and subsequently, at 2 pm the East and West Lower Promenade, as well as the Atal bridge of the Sabarmati Riverfront, were also closed. The local authorities will assess the situation later in the evening before deciding whether to reopen these areas.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner C.R. Kharsan of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation emphasized that the landfall process of the cyclone has been completed, and the city is now bracing itself for heavy rain and strong winds.

In addition to the closure of public spaces, the Ahmedabad Fire Brigade has taken proactive measures. They have visited the Disaster Control Room at the Collector’s Office and coordinated with the Fire and Emergency Command Control Room to enhance their disaster response capabilities. The rescue team stationed at the Sabarmati Riverfront is on high alert and fully prepared to respond to any emergencies.
