India’s first locally developed nuclear reactor at Kakrapar in Gujarat starts operations

Kakrapar: India’s first indigenously developed 700 MWe nuclear power reactor KAPP-3 at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP) in South Gujarat has started commercial operations today at 90 percent of its total power.
The Government of India’s arm, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is setting up two 700 MW pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWRs) at Kakrapar – KAPP-3 and KAPP-4.
Kakrapar is also home to two 220 MW power plants.
Officials have reported that several commissioning activities were in progress at KAPP 4, with a significant advancement of 96.92 %achieved by the end of May.
The NPCIL has approved both the financial and administrative aspects of constructing sixteen 700 MW PHWRs throughout the country.
Construction of 700 MW nuclear power plants is taking place at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan (RAPS 7 and 8) and at Gorakhpur in Haryana (GHAVP 1 and 2).
