Golden Bridge on Narmada River shut for vehicle and pedestrian movements

Bharuch: The district collector of Bharuch has issued a notification imposing restrictions on vehicle and pedestrian access to the Golden Bridge on the Narmada River in Bharuch.

A ban has been implemented on the movements of vehicles and people across the Golden Bridge of Bharuch. The ban has been put in place due to concerns about potential damage to the 143-year-old historical bridge. The Golden Bridge, constructed in 1881, was designed by Sir John Hawkshaw. It was built at a cost of Rs 45.65 lakh and construction began on December 7, 1877.

Vehicle transportation across the bridge commenced on May 16, 1881. The contract for constructing the bridge was awarded to Bombay, Baroda, and Central India Railways by the British Government. The bridge acquired its name “Golden Bridge” due to its construction cost significantly exceeding the initial estimates of the administration at that time. DeshGujarat
