Gujarat and Maharashtra witnessed highest custodial deaths in last five years

New Delhi: Gujarat and Maharashtra were the two states with the highest number of deaths in police custody in the last five years, as stated by the Union government in the Lok Sabha today.
According to Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, a total of 687 people died in police custody across the country from April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2023.
Out of these, Gujarat reported 81 deaths in police custody, while Maharashtra recorded 80 such deaths during the mentioned period.
Other states with a significant number of police custodial deaths were Madhya Pradesh with 50 deaths, Bihar with 47 deaths, Uttar Pradesh with 41 deaths, and Tamil Nadu with 36 deaths.
The data provided by the National Human Rights Commission shows that there were 164 deaths in police custody reported in 2022-23, 175 in 2021-22, 100 in 2020-21, 112 in 2019-20, and 136 in 2018-2019. DeshGujarat.
