A section of Ashram Road to permanently close next year

Sabarmati:  A 750-meter section of Ashram Road, stretching from Cargo Motors to the RTO, is likely to be permanently closed after December this year. This closure is because of two major projects, namely the Vadaj Ramdevpir Tekra slum rehabilitation initiative and the development of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct.

To address the Ashram Road closure, a new 18-meter-wide road is being constructed adjacent to Cargo Motors. This new route will connect to a proposed 24-meter-wide road via the Prabodh Raval bridge, ultimately linking it to the 132ft Ring Road. Additionally, the road on the west bank of the Sabarmati riverfront will provide direct access to a 24-meter road through Ramapir Tekra, offering direct connectivity to the main Ranip GSRTC bus stand. The land reclamation process is underway to facilitate these developments.

Besides the closure of Ashram Road, the AMC intends to establish a new road network for the Vadaj slum rehabilitation and Gandhi Ashram rehabilitation projects. This involves creating a new road near the Khadi Gramodyog and a road over the drain from Mehsana Society. The Town Planning Scheme T for the area is also undergoing revision, with plans for more than 10 new internal routes in both the Gandhi Ashram precinct and Vadaj slum redevelopment projects.

The entire 55-acre area will witness road projects worth Rs 48.70 crore and a street lighting overhaul worth Rs 16.38 crore. DeshGujarat
