Rajkot Civil Hospital sets up special cardio ward for Navratri

Rajkot: In response to a series of recent fatalities due to heart failure, including two individuals who passed away while participating in garba, the Rajkot Civil Hospital has established a specialized cardiology ward with 50 beds in the multi-purpose super-specialty building. This ward is specifically designed to address emergencies during the nine-day Navratri festival.

Just a week ago, a 24-year-old in Junagadh and a 19-year-old engineering student in Jamnagar lost their lives while playing garba . Moreover, in a 48-hour period ending on Wednesday noon, the civil hospital reported five deaths attributed to sudden cardiac failure.

Dr. Radheshyam Trivedi, the hospital’s superintendent, explained that the cardiology ward will allocate 20 beds for males, 20 for females, and include 10 ICU beds. It will be under the supervision of a doctor with an MD qualification and will be operational round-the-clock. Dr. Trivedi further noted that if any individual complains of chest pain or breathing difficulties, doctors will promptly conduct a comprehensive assessment and provide appropriate treatment if signs of cardiac illness are detected. Those without symptoms will receive counseling and may be discharged.

“The ward has been put into operation and will remain operational throughout the Navratri festival,” he confirmed. He also mentioned that if necessary, the newly inaugurated cath lab by the chief minister would be utilized.

Saurashtra region has experienced at least 11 fatalities, primarily among individuals under the age of 45, since September 20. DeshGujarat
