Amreli: Gujarat Congress leader Virji Thummar has been booked for making “objectionable” remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The complaint was lodged by Mehul Dhorajiya, general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Amreli district unit.
Dhorajiya, in his complaint, asserted that the words used by Thummar against the Prime Minister were defamatory and had the potential to incite a breach of peace. “We have registered a non-cognizable offence against Thummar based on a complaint that we had received,” informed Himkar Singh, Superintendent of Police (SP), Amreli.
The former MP has been booked under sections 499 (criminal defamation), 500 (punishment for defamation), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on Saturday.
Simultaneously, Thummar lodged a police complaint, asserting that Amreli BJP MP Naran Kachhadiya, local BJP MLAs, and leaders defamed him by burning his effigies and making “insulting” comments. He sought police protection, citing a threat to his life, and denied making defamatory remarks about the PM.
Regarding Thummar’s counter-complaint, the SP mentioned that the police are evaluating the details to determine if any offence is established. “We have received his complaint and are examining if any offence is committed as stated by him. However, no offence has been registered yet,” Singh stated.
Thummar, addressing a public gathering in the old yard of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Amreli on Friday, said that the PM was acting as a broker for Adani and Ambani. DeshGujarat
