Junagadh: A farmer from Keshod taluka has received recognition for cultivating Jain Potatoes on his farm. The 75-year-old Harsukhbhai Dobaria has successfully grown Jain potatoes, which grow as vegetables above the ground, unlike general potatoes that are root vegetables and grow underground.
Harsukhbhai has garnered recognition with his distinctive and successful farming methods, which he shares with several farmers. It is learned that at the age of 14, while undertaking Parikrama in Junagadh, he got lost, and during that time, he encountered a saint who gifted him a specific plant. Harsukhbhai attributes his farming success to this encounter.
According to Harsukhbhai, Jain potatoes exhibit a greater level of sweetness compared to other varieties. Consuming this potato is believed to contribute to the health of the left side of the body. Even at the age of 75, Harsukhbhai continues to include this potato in his diet, considering it the secret to his good health.
The nomenclature of this potato is linked to the dietary preferences of the Jain society, as they typically avoid root vegetables. The Jain potato, unlike traditional ones, grows above the ground, making it suitable for consumption by Jains. DeshGujarat
