Probe against Surat cop after SC calls illegal custody ‘grossest of contempt’

Surat: City Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar on Monday, announced a departmental inquiry against a suspended police officer accused of arresting and mistreating a local businessman, even though he had anticipatory bail from the Supreme Court in a cheating case.

The Supreme Court, noting the ‘illegal custody’ of the businessman, called it the “grossest of contempt.” On Monday, the apex court stated that it would direct the Gujarat High Court to provide proper training to magistrates.

The accused inspector of Vesu Police station, R Y Raval, arrested Tushar Shah on December 13, leading to a four-day police custody in connection with a cheating case filed by Abhishek Goswami. It is reported that during the custody, Shah was tortured and threatened to settle outstanding dues amounting to Rs. 1.65 crore owed to Goswami.

Shah, who had obtained anticipatory bail on December 8, filed a contempt petition in the apex court. The bench, comprising Supreme Court judges B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta, issued notices to police officials and a judicial magistrate of Surat. Now, a departmental inquiry has been launched against the suspended cop. DeshGujarat
