Baraatis pick up brooms to clean firecracker trash from road in Surat

Surat: A unique incident took place in the Katargam area of the city, presenting a juxtaposition. While the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is actively imposing fines for littering in public areas, a group of wedding attendees has set an example by taking responsibility for cleaning up the litter after bursting crackers during the wedding procession (Baarat).

Just a fortnight ago, the SMC had fined a baraat with Rs. 5000 for littering. However, in another such Baarat, a group of individuals who had burst firecrackers during a wedding procession took it upon themselves to clean up the debris. When a horse cart passed through Aamba Talavadi road in Katargam, the individuals grabbed brooms and cleaned up the scattered paper remnants of the firecrackers, setting an example of civic responsibility.

The cleanliness survey results for 2023, announced in January 2024, awarded Surat city the top rank. To uphold this prestigious position as the cleanest city, continuous efforts are being made to ensure the cleanliness of public spaces and roads round the clock. In line with this, the SMC is taking measures against those responsible for littering during celebrations in Varghoda (wedding processions). DeshGujarat
