Congress candidate Geniben Thakor wins Banaskantha Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat
June 04, 2024
Palanpur: Congress has won Bakaskantha Lok Sabha seat in Gujarat. This is the only seat, Congress has won out of total 26. This is party’s first Lok Sabha election victory in Gujarat after 2009. In 2014 and 2019 general elections, Congress couldn’t win any seat in the State.
Congress candidate Geniben Thakor has won Banaskantha seat by a margin of over 30,000 votes against her nearest rival, BJP candidate Dr. Rekhaben Chaudhary. Geniben Thakor is presently the MLA of Wav assembly seat in Banaskantha district. With her victory, Geniben has arrested BJP’s hetric of clean sweep in Gujarat. With this win, she has personally also emerged as a big wig leader within Gujarat Congress.
While States like Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand have elected all BJP candidate, the home-state of Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi has elected one Congress MP to Lok Sabha, the reason why Congress is overjoyed by Geniben’s victory.
The Congress party has only one member of parliament from Gujarat at present, who is Gujarat Congress chief Shaktisinh Gohil. He is elected as Rajya Sabha member. However after his term is over in next couple of years, Congress will not be able to elect any Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat due to lack of numbers in the State assembly. Post that, Geniben will be the only member of parliament from Gujarat, representing Congress.
Reacting to the Banaskantha verdict, Gujarat BJP chief CR Patil said we have regret that we couldn’t win Banaskantha seat. DeshGujarat
