World’s first Gau Mutra Dairy in Gujarat; Buys 1000 ltr of cow urine daily from farmers

Banaskantha: In Ayurveda, cow urine (Gau Mutra) is revered as no less than nectar, renowned for curing many complicated and intolerable diseases at their root. Inspired by this belief, a cow enthusiast from Abala village in Bhabhar taluka of Banaskantha has established the world’s first Gau Mutra Dairy

The plant named ‘Dhenuprasad Agrovat’ was set up 7 years ago by one Shyam Purohit. Initially facing challenges in maintaining indigenous cows due to economic pressures, Shyam not only established the plant but also raised awareness among cattle breeders.

Today, the Gau Mutra Dairy purchases around 1000 liters of cow urine daily. More than 700 farmers in the district supply cow urine to this dairy, receiving Rs. 5  per liter.

Each native cow produces approximately 15 to 16 liters of cow urine daily, enabling cattle rearers to earn up to Rs. 75 per day. The dairy purchases an average of 20,000 liters of cow urine per month, worth Rs. 1 lakh, from numerous farming families in Bhabhar taluka alone.

This initiative aims to promote organic farming among farmers and encourage the rearing of indigenous cattle. The dairy converts waste cow urine into valuable biological liquid fertilizer. Plans are underway to install a plant capable of handling 10,000 liters of cow urine within the next six months.

Madanbhai Purohit, manager of Gaumutra Dairy, reflects on their journey: “Our father’s longstanding devotion to cows inspired us to explore the potential of cow urine, leading to the establishment of this dairy. Starting with 50 liters, we now procure 1000 liters daily and engage over 700 cattle farmers.”

Bhavesh Purohit from the Dairy’s Research Department adds, “We are receiving 1000-1200 liters of cow urine daily, which we buy at Rs. 5 per liter from the farmers. This amounts to around Rs. 2-3 lakh paid to farmers just for cow urine, supporting them financially. We then process cow urine to produce various beneficial products.”

The initiative has significantly benefited the livelihoods of herdsmen and farmers in Banaskantha district, who now supplement their income from milk and cow dung sales with earnings from cow urine. Many farmers have transitioned to cow-based natural farming, citing financial support and increased farm productivity.

A cowherd woman from Sisodra village in Bhabhar taluka shares her experience: “We raise desi cows and previously earned income solely from milk. Now, the dairy purchases cow urine from us, providing financial assistance. Organic manure derived from cow urine has enhanced our farm yields.”

This innovative approach not only supports agricultural sustainability but also promotes the benefits of cow urine in various applications, including pesticides and Ayurvedic medicines. The dairy’s products, derived from cow urine, are sold across states like Punjab, Haryana, Kashmir, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, furthering its impact on organic farming practices. DeshGujarat
