GCAS mess: BJP MLA writes to CM, DRB College cancels 106 admissions
June 27, 2024
Surat: Kishor Kanani, also known as Kumar Kanani, the BJP MLA from Varachha, raised concerns in a letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel regarding college admissions in the state through the government portal, alleging misconduct by private colleges.
Two days after this letter, today DRB College in Surat has cancelled 106 admissions. Initially, more than 5,000 admission offer letters were issued for 600 available seats. Now, due to this controversy, admissions of 106 students lacking merit have been revoked. The college had deviated from the usual merit-based admission process and instead offered admissions on a first-come, first-served basis. The Chancellor of VNSGU has suspended the BBA admission process at DRB College.
“Despite using the GCAS (Gujarat Common Admission Service) portal for admissions, private colleges are involved in corrupt practices, demanding money for admissions,” stated Kanani, the ruling party MLA.
In his letter to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Kanani mentioned, “According to students’ offer letters, admissions were scheduled between June 16 and 25, but colleges admitted students as early as June 16, bypassing the merit-based process.”
“The administration at VNSGU and the college raised their hands, stating that the admission process is conducted through the GCAS portal and that they have no monitoring system, leaving the students stranded,” the letter further states.
“Due to this disorganized process, many students on the merit list were denied admission, leaving students and parents perplexed. The chaotic admissions have led to widespread corruption, with money exchanged through intermediaries,” added the MLA.
