SMC saves Rs 1079 crore through renewable energy and waste management

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has saved Rs 1079 crore until now through effective waste management and renewable energy initiatives. SMC saved Rs 60.54 crore from wind power and Rs 6.18 crore from solar power in the financial year 2023-24 alone.

SMC has presented its budget for the year 2024-25, amounting to Rs 8700 crore. The budget includes capital expenditure and also focuses on creating additional income sources. SMC’s efforts to save money through tertiary treatment plants, solar power, wind power, and biogas plants have been successful. 

Corporator Dipen Desai detailed SMC’s savings from various projects in a general meeting on Wednesday. Desai noted the successful experiment of supplying treated water from three sewage treatment plants to industries, each with a capacity of 115 MLD. The corporation earned Rs 557 crore from water supplied through these plants until March 2024.

Additionally, SMC has saved Rs 422 crore from wind power and Rs 42 crore from solar energy till date. Last year, the corporation saved Rs 6.18 crore from the solar power project and Rs 60.54 crore from wind power.
