Gujarat High Court renames Metropolitan Court as Judicial Magistrate Court effective July 1

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has issued a public notice renaming the Metropolitan Court as the Judicial Magistrate Court, Ahmedabad City. This change takes effect from July 1, 2024, with the implementation of the Indian Civil Security Code. The court has announced that all existing Metropolitan Courts will be re-designated under the new nomenclature.

Key changes include:

  • The Metropolitan Court located in Gheekanta will be renamed the Judicial Magistrate Court, Ahmedabad City.
  • The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court will become the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Ahmedabad City.
  • The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court will be renamed the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Ahmedabad City.
  • Other Metropolitan Court numbers will be renamed as the First Judicial Magistrate Court, Second Judicial Magistrate Court, and so on.

The Gujarat High Court has published a new list with these designations. From July 1, 2024, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A.N. Vora will be the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ahmedabad City. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate S.J. Panchal will be the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate.

Similarly, all Additional Metropolitan Magistrates, from the Second to the Forty-First, will be re-designated as Additional Chief Judicial Magistrates according to their numbers. For example, the Second Metropolitan Magistrate will be called the Second Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ahmedabad City.

The Indian Civil Security Code does not include provisions for Metropolitan City, Metropolitan Court, or Metropolitan Magistrate. Following High Court consultations, the Law Department issued a public notice, and now the Gujarat High Court has officially announced the name changes. DeshGujarat
