Aviary to be set up at Kankaria Zoo; Civic body seeks consultants

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is seeking consultants to design an aviary at Kankaria Zoo as part of the zoo’s expansion plan. The new aviary is planned to serve as a natural habitat for a wider variety of birds, according to civic body officials.

According to the AMC, the scope of work will include a detailed site study involving the inspection of existing structures, trees, and features, as well as contour and topography surveys.

The consultant will be required to create a landscape design plan that integrates with the water elements not limited
to ponds, fountains, etc., and green areas. This design will incorporate walkways for zoo visitors, planting beds, and any additional features desired by the authority. Visitor walkways are to be planned to facilitate animal crossings with minimal disruption, allowing people to enjoy and observe the species in their natural environment.

The aviary’s structural centerpiece will be a series of interconnected domes exceeding 25 feet in height, each designated to accommodate specific bird species including water birds, ground birds, carnivorous birds, and high-flying species. Special attention will ensure the domes are secure for nesting and landing, with features designed to prevent bird movement between sections.

The Request for Proposal, issued on June 28th, also specifies that amenities for birds, such as drinking and seating areas, will be designed using natural earth substrates to replicate their natural habitats. Educational components, including signage highlighting plants and ecological features, will further enhance visitor engagement. DeshGujarat
