Works for world’s largest Multi Modal Transport Hub in progress in Surat
July 10, 2024
Overview
Surat’s Multi-Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) project is set to become the world’s largest transport hub, combining commercial and residential facilities. Spanning 72 acres, this Surat MMTH will also be the largest in Asia, surpassing even the existing MMTHs in Nagpur and Kowloon, Hong Kong.
Details of the Surat MMTH Project:
The Surat MMTH will integrate a comprehensive network of long-distance buses, city buses, BRTS buses, railways, metro, and suburban trains all at one location. This integration ensures seamless connectivity for passengers, making it a first-of-its-kind project in India. The MMTH will utilise 90,000 metric tons of steel and 3.25 lakh cubic metres of concrete. The total construction area for the MMTH will be 1.10 crore square feet on its completion.
Cost and Phases of the Project:
The MMTH project is a joint venture between Indian Railways, the Gujarat Government, and the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). The estimated total cost of the project is Rs 5400 crore, with private investors contributing to the project. The first phase will cost Rs 878 crore, and the second phase will require Rs 500 crore. The construction is likely to complete by December 2026.
Passenger Convenience and Connectivity:
The hub will feature six entry-exit points for metro passengers, allowing direct access to the railway station, GSRTC bus station, city bus station, and BRTS bus station. This integration means that passengers can switch between different modes of transport without stepping outside the MMTH building.
Infrastructure Enhancements:
To further enhance connectivity, a skywalk will connect all modes internally. Additionally, the long Hanuman Road and Varachha Main Road will be elevated near the hub, enabling direct access from the main roads to the MMTH.
Comparison with Surat Diamond Bourse:
The Surat MMTH will surpass the Surat Diamond Bourse currently spanning over 35 acres. The Diamond Bourse used 54,000 metric tons of steel and 50,000 cubic metres of concrete for its 67 lakh square feet of construction. On the other hand, the MMTH will utilise 90,000 metric tons of steel and 3.25 lakh cubic metres of concrete to cover 1.10 crore square feet. Moreover, Surat Diamond Bourse currently caters to commercial needs, whereas MMTH will be both commercial and residential.
Future-Proof Planning:
The Surat MMTH project is designed with a vision for the next 50 years and promises a milestone for Surat and India in transportation infrastructure. Thus, this project is expected to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth and urban development in the region. DeshGujarat
