Surat Collector bans production, sale, and use of glue pads for rats
July 26, 2024
Surat: The Surat District Collector has announced a ban on the production, sale, and use of glue traps within the city and district. This decision is based on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which aims to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering to animals. Glue traps are considered a violation of this act as mice suffer a slow and painful death when trapped.
Legal action will be taken against those who violate this ban by using, selling, or manufacturing glue traps.
Glue traps, also known as glue strips, are commonly available in medical stores. These traps are placed in areas where rats are known to roam. Rodents caught in glue traps often die from starvation, dehydration, or exhaustion as they struggle to free themselves.
Previously, small cages were used to catch mice, which were then released into the open. However, glue traps have gained popularity due to their widespread availability and ease of use. When a mouse touches the glue strip, it becomes stuck due to the adhesive. Despite their efforts to escape, the mice cannot free themselves from the trap.
To enforce the ban, authorities will pursue legal action against individuals or businesses that continue to use, sell, or manufacture glue traps. The district collector has issued a public notice detailing the ban, and the Animal Cruelty Prevention Society will help ensuring its implementation. DeshGujarat
