Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is developing a Light Tank for the Indian Army, specifically for high-altitude deployment. The prototype of this Light Tank has been completed and named ‘Zorawar’. Larsen & Toubro Ltd. in Hazira, Surat is leading the system integration for the Light Tank.

The total sanctioned cost for the project is ₹234.5 crore, covering design, development, and prototype realization. Multiple MSMEs are involved in developing various subsystems for the tank. Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, provided this information in a written response to the Lok Sabha.

DRDO and L&T unveiled the indigenous light tank ‘Zorawar’ on July 6 at L&T’s plant in Hazira, Gujarat. This tank is designed to enhance the capabilities of Indian forces stationed in Ladakh along the China border.

The light tank was developed in just two years, with initial trials conducted in Hazira. Comprehensive trials will continue for 12 to 18 months. The first 59 tanks will be delivered to the Indian Army, with an additional 295 planned. Weighing 25 tons, the tank is half the weight of heavy tanks like the T-90 and is designed for operation in hilly and challenging terrains. DeshGujarat
