-VMC Commissioner commented – Today there was rainfall in city and rural areas, last night there was 2 inch rain fall, before that there was one inch rainfall, and prior to that there was 2 inch rainfall with strong winds, and there was rain even before that. So there has been continuous rainfall in Vadodara and in Panchmahal. And so the levels at Vishwamitri and also Ajwa dam are rising gradually. This rise is thanks to the rainfall through last four days. Four days ago Vishwamitri was at 6 ft and now it’s above 22 ft. Ajwa was at 211.5 ft and now it’s above 213 ft. There’s no forecast of further rainfall and therefore possibility is that the water will flow, however we felt shifting of people from low lying areas was required and so we proceeded for the same.

Vadodara: The level of water of Vishwamitri river is rising once again. However it is far from the danger level when we are writting this. The danger level will be at 26 ft and flood level shall be 30 ft. At 4.30 pm today it crossed 20 ft mark. Today’s rise in water level is mainly due to over 3 inch rainfall in the aftrnoon in Vadodara city. As of 5 pm, Alkapuri underpass was closed for traffic but later in the evening it was reopened. Water logging and related traffic jam could be seen in the city in the afternoon due to rainfall. In Sama area, some people could be seen in Sunday afternoon parking their cars on the over bridges in order to save them from possible flood. Water logging could be seen at Genda circle, Sayajigunj and other areas. However remember, this water logging was due to the rainfall and Vishwamitri was not flooding.

Only in the case of extremely heavy rain (which means the rainfall above 8 inches) in Vadodara city/district or Panchmahal district can bring flood in the city. There’s upgraded Orange alert for very heavy  rainfall from IMD for Vadodara district till 8.30 am on Monday. And therefore the situation of fresh rainfall is to be watched out. Also it has to be noted that Ajwa’s water level rose to 213 on Sunday. If it reaches 213.85, water release will be must and it will lift the water levels of Vishwamitri then.  In such situation, the only thing to watch out is decrease in water level of Vishwamitri, and rainfall in Vadodara city/district and Panchmahal district, particularly Halol taluka.

The water level of Vishwamitri at 12 noon today was 16.40 ft from where it rose to 17.15 at 4 pm. A day before on Saturday, the level was 14 ft at 6 am and 15.80 ft at 10 am. As per the data available from the State government, during 6 am to 2 pm, Vadodara district’s Padra had 11, Vaghodia 10, Dabhoi 10, Vadodara city had 8, Desar had 4 mm average rainfall. Panchmahal district’s Jambudhoda had 6 and Halol had 5 mm, Godhra had 2 mm rainfall. However rainfall increased after 2 pm.

The city municipal commissioner said there’s 3 inches rainfall in the city in a short span. The level yesterday rose from 10 ft in the morning to 17 ft later in the day and today due to 3 inch rainfall it has grown further. Some areas witness water logging at 22 ft level and VMC has arranged buses and readied schools on stand by mode for any shifting. Gates of Ajwa dams and Pratappura are closed. Monsoon forecast doesn’t suggest strong rainfall. Monsoon will in fact weaken, and thereofore the citizens barring those in low lying areas need not to worry at present.
