October 18, 2024
Vadodara: A new weir will be constructed on the Mahi River near Poicha village, located in Savli taluka of Vadodara, at a cost of Rs. 429.76 crore. The Chief Minister is expected to lay the foundation stone for the weir scheme on October 19th. After the weir is built, it will be beneficial in providing drinking and irrigation water to 34 villages in Savli taluka and 15 villages in Umreth taluka.
Kadana Dam, Dolatpura Weir, Wanakbori Dam (weir), and Sindhrot Weir have already been built on the Mahi River, and the new Poicha (kanoda) Weir is planned to be constructed between the Wanakbori and Sindhrot Weirs.
The construction of this weir will benefit 34 villages in Savli taluka and 15 villages in Umreth taluka. The availability of drinking and irrigation water will become easier for the population of about 77,000 in Savli and around 40 villages. Upstream of this weir, water can fill up to about 15 km, and groundwater irrigation can be done in the area over 4 km on both sides of the river.
Not only this, but this weir will recharge around 490 wells in 49 villages. Overall, due to this weir, the groundwater level will rise, and its quality will also improve. This will directly and indirectly benefit the surrounding area through irrigation.
Given that Savli is also a growing industrial center, the construction of this weir on the Mahi River will provide enough water for industrial consumption, boosting industrial development. Furthermore, with the development of a lake over a 90 lakh square meter area, fisheries will also be developed and promoted. DeshGujarat
