Decrease in number of ATMs as online transactions grow

Ahmedabad: With the launch of UPI and the advancement of digital banking services across the country, including Gujarat, there has been a decrease in the number of ATM centers in urban areas of the state. Meanwhile, banks are increasing the number of ATMs in rural areas to expand banking services. According to the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC) report for the September quarter, the number of ATMs in urban and semi-urban areas has decreased by 239, while the number of ATMs in rural areas has increased.

In September 2023, there were 10,591 ATM centers in urban areas of Gujarat. By September 2024, this number had decreased to 10,352 ATMs. In contrast, the number of ATMs in rural areas rose from 1,756 last year to 1,808 this year. By the end of September, there were 6,972 bank branches in cities, compared to 6,686 branches during the same period last year, meaning that 286 new bank branches opened in urban areas.
