Man adopts Hindu name to befriend, sexually assault female college mate in Surat; nabbed

Surat: A case of alleged “love jihad” has come to light in the city involving a textile trader, Yusuf Mia Mohammad Mandapwala, who lives in Adajan Patiya. He adopted a Hindu name to establish a romantic relationship with a young woman, whom he had studied with in college, and sexually assaulted her. Later, the accused man and his wife physically assaulted the victim. Following the incident, the Rander police arrested the couple.

It is learned that Yusuf Mandapwala (42), who resides in the Garden Society near Shalimar Society in Adajan, is involved in textile trading and export. In 2000, while studying in college, Yusuf made contact with a fellow student from Rander. At that time, he concealed his real name and adopted the Hindu name Kamalsingh to trap the woman into a romantic relationship. After ensnaring her, Yusuf would call her to meet, and they would spend time together. He also made false promises of marriage and established a physical relationship with her. During this time, when the woman became pregnant, Yusuf arranged for an abortion without her family’s knowledge.

It was also revealed that during their relationship, Yusuf had purchased a moped in the woman’s name, and she was paying the installments for it. When the relationship soured and the victim went to Yusuf’s house to retrieve the moped, Yusuf and his wife, Habiba Yusuf Mandapwala, verbally abused her and physically assaulted her. The Rander police have arrested both Yusuf and his wife, Habiba Mandapwala, in connection with this case and are conducting further investigations. DeshGujarat
