25K rural households across Gujarat to get fiber-to-home connectivity under pilot project: Govt

Gandhinagar: As part of the Digital Gujarat campaign, the ‘Har Ghar Connectivity’ (Fiber to Family) initiative was launched on the last Good Governance Day, i.e., December 25, with the aim of digitally empowering households in the rural areas of the state by converting them into ‘Smart Homes’. Under this initiative, households in rural areas of Gujarat will be provided with high-quality internet connections and other value-added services at affordable rates.

The Har Ghar Connectivity (Fiber-to-Family) initiative has been launched by Gujarat Fiber Grid Network Limited (GFGNL) under the State Department of Science and Technology. Through GFGNL, rural households will be provided with affordable, high-quality internet connections along with value-added services (VAS) such as Wi-Fi, cable TV (free-to-air and paid channels), OTT (over-the-top television), and gaming. Initially, 25,000 FTTH (fiber-to-home) connections will be provided as a pilot project in partnership with various agencies. Subsequently, these connections will be scaled up in the future, benefiting more and more rural households.

Through this initiative, services like television entertainment, payment of utility bills, digital service stacks, and government-to-citizen (G2C) services will be made available to rural households. Additionally, services such as online education (e-education), IoT solutions for agriculture, e-agriculture, information dissemination related to animal husbandry, e-health, and telemedicine will also be available at home.

Four new initiatives were launched last month, on December 25, by GFGNL, with the aim of providing accessible digital connectivity to both rural and urban areas of the state. These initiatives include the Har Ghar Connectivity (Fiber-to-Family) initiative, the Rural Level Connectivity – Fiber to Field Office initiative, the Fiber-to-Far-Flung Towers initiative, and the Urban Level Connectivity initiative.

Under these initiatives, rural government offices will be connected to the state capital, Gandhinagar, through the BharatNet network, to provide easy digital connectivity to the rural people of the state, which will further strengthen e-governance. In addition, GFGNL will provide faster connectivity to government offices in urban areas as well.

Notably, Gujarat is the first state selected by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) for BharatNet Phase-3 (Amended BharatNet Program) under the State-Led Model, under which a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) has been signed with the Central Government. Gujarat has been a leader in BharatNet Phase-II project infrastructure and utilization and is committed to being a leader in BharatNet Phase-III as well.

With these four initiatives, the Gujarat government aims to realize the goal of a connected government, connected citizens, connected communities, and connected businesses in the near future. DeshGujarat
