February 06, 2025
Ahmedabad: The railway network in Gujarat has seen an unprecedented rise in track doubling work during the 10 years of the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In contrast to the 40 km of track doubling work carried out under the UPA regime from 2004 to 2014, the Indian Railways undertook the doubling of 766 km of railway track in the state from 2014 to 2024.
This process of expanding a single track to a double track is called “doubling,” and over the last ten years, there was an 1815% average annual increase in double-line projects.
The 766 kilometers that were doubled during the 2014-2024 period include routes such as Rajkot-Surendranagar, Udhana-Ukai Songadh-Jalgaon, Viramgam-Samakhiyali, Palanpur-Samakhiyali, Vatva-Ahmedabad (3rd Line), Udhna-Surat (3rd Line), Palanpur-Shri Amirgadh-Abu Road, Mahesana-Bhandu Moti Dau, Viramgam-Surendranagar, Anand-Od, and Palanpur-Dharewada.
Additionally, more than 8 projects for doubling or quadrupling (adding a 4th line) are ongoing in Gujarat. These include the Rajkot-Kanalus Doubling Project, Anand-Godhra Doubling Project, Mahesana-Palanpur Doubling, and Bhatinda-Bhildi Doubling. Other projects include the Barejadi Nandej (Geratpur) – Sanand 4th Line (Ahmedabad By-pass) work, Gandhidham – Adipur Quadrupling, Samakhiali – Gandhidham Quadrupling, Y-Connectivity between Sabarmati ‘A’ and Asarva, and Vishwamitri – Dabhoi Doubling Project.
