February 08, 2025
Rajkot: The new terminal at Rajkot International Airport, located at Hirasar, is set to become operational on February 9. Approved by the Customs Department, this upgrade allows Rajkot to handle international flights, marking a major milestone for the region. While domestic operations have been running for two years through a temporary terminal, international flights are yet to begin.
Covering 23,000 square meters, the terminal features modern amenities such as 256 CCTV cameras, four aerobridges, and parking for 14 aircraft. It is designed to accommodate up to 1,800 passengers at a time, ensuring seamless operations. Inspired by the Ranjitvilas Palace, the interiors showcase the rich cultural heritage of Saurashtra. Key facilities include three conveyor belts, 20 check-in counters, and an advanced fire alarm system.
Rajkot airport director Diganta Borah told media that the customs department has officially approved cargo clearance at Rajkot airport. The department will handle both air cargo and passenger baggage, with a team scheduled to visit next week to finalize arrangements before operations commence.
He also mentioned that an immigration department team recently inspected the airport, and their operations are expected to begin soon.
Starting February 9, all domestic flights, including routes to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Goa, Hyderabad, and Bangalore, will shift to the new terminal.
Spanning 1,032 hectares, the airport boasts a 3,040-meter-long runway, seven boarding gates, and eight immigration counters. It has the capacity to manage 14 flights per hour and can accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A320-200 and Boeing B737-900, enhancing connectivity.
This airport is Gujarat’s first greenfield airport and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2023. DeshGujarat
